This year Teach First is looking to recruit their largest ever intake of 1000 graduates, to begin working in schools facing challenging circumstances from September 2012.

Working Part-time during your studies

As promised this is the presentation used during the event last Saturday. Thank you to all those who attended; I hope the event was useful. Do remember that the Careers and Employment Centre has a Drop In service which runs every day 12.00-16.00 where you can talk to a Careers Counsellor in a face to face meeting for 20 minutes. No appointment needed - just come along and wait your turn during this time.

STUDENT ASSOCIATES SCHEME

Could you inspire young people to aim higher, or are you thinking about teaching as a career? Are you interested in gaining classroom experience whilst still pursuing your studies?
Student Associates Scheme gives you an excellent opportunity to try out teaching. We are currently recruiting for participants to the 2010-2011 Student Associates Scheme. If you are a current student studying Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Design and Technology or IT and think you may be interested in secondary teaching or being involved in AimHigher this is an ideal opportunity for you.
The course comprises a three week placement in a secondary school between May and July, two university sessions based at Westminster Institute of Education at Harcourt Hill and 6 hours e-learning.
It is not only a free course free participants you will also receive a bursary on successful completion of the programme. Also you can receive credits towards the first module of a PGCE.

On-Campus Volunteers Needed

The Students’ Union Advice Centre is looking for volunteers to support this valuable service. Duties will vary according to your skills and may include reception, admin, booking appointments, marketing both on-line and in person. We ask for a regular commitment of 3 hours per week & respect for client confidentiality. We offer fantastic experience for your CV and full training.
Applicants need to complete our application form and return it to us by Friday 6th May 2011. Training will be on Monday 23rd May from 10am to 3pm. The applicants who are accepted to become volunteers will be able to start during the summer or when they return in September. Forms should be emailed to suadvice@brookes.ac.uk. 8 Task Challenge

The exciting 8 Task Challenge in partnership with Grant Thornton will be taking place for the second year on 9 April 2011. It will allow you to test yourselves against other students from universities in the UK, all with the aim of a chance of winning part of an £8,500 prize fund!
The event will involve you working in teams of four to complete a combination of mental and physical tasks – think of it as a cross between adventure racing and the krypton factor!
The mental challenges will test your skills and competencies similar to how graduate recruiters would test these during the recruitment process, while the physical challenges are an exciting combination of canoeing, cycling and running.

Student Welcome Staff required for Induction Week

The Student Services Department are looking for a team of staff to work during the Induction / Enrolment week, from Monday 19th September to Friday 23rd September 2011. The Welcome Team will train and work together but will be split between various information points in the Main Foyer on the Gipsy Lane Site. You will be supporting new and returning students through enrolment and induction into the University. We are recruiting for two roles: The Information Desk (4 posts) and The Induction Desk (2 posts). The deadline for applications is Friday 8th April by 5pm. The FSA Insight Programme

The FSA Insight Programme for first year students is taking place on 23–25 March 2011 at the offices of the FSA in Canary Wharf, London and is designed to give students a real insight into the role and opportunities within the FSA. Over the three days the students will take part in interactive exercises and have the opportunity to meet trainees and graduate recruiters. The event is open to first year students from all degree disciplines. Presentations and Surgeries: Every Monday during weeks 4-8 Semester 2, 2011 Surgeries: 11.45-12.15pm and 12.45-1-15pm Come and talk to a Careers Adviser, no appointment needed. You can ask any questions about job hunting and the recruitment process, or you can have your CV or application form checked.
Presentations: 12.15-12.45pm RLT2 Short and quick fire, covering the important points of the recruitment process. Developed especially with engineers in mind, explaining how to make the most of your technical skills.
CVs for Engineers – Writing a Winning CV - Monday 28 February Following on from the previous session I will explain how to present your CV in a structured and attractive way.
Application Forms - the tricky bits - Monday 7 March Online applications are difficult! The competency type questions are designed to test your ability to write succinctly and give detail. I will explain how you can answer these questions more easily using a tried and trusted technique.
Interview Skills – the tricky questions - Monday 14 March “Tell me about your strengths and weaknesses?” This is a common question but is very hard to answer. I will explain how to answer this question and many others.
Interview skills – Top Tips - Monday 21 March In this session I will explain all the things that can make you an interview winner; including what employers are looking for, body language, and the questions you can ask.

TARGETjobs National Pupillage Fair

The TARGETjobs National Pupillage Fair is the only event for students seeking pupillages to meet with chambers and course providers. Students will have the valuable opportunity to speak to chambers, get their questions answered and gain an insight into life at the Bar. During the day there will be a programme of talks covering key topics, for example criminal bar, commercial bar, common law bar, human rights bar and other specialist areas of practice. Working in Law (Solicitor/ Scientific Patent Attorney)

Week 5: Thursday 3rd March, SG01, 12-1pm. Jim Kinnier Wilson, Partner, Manches LLP, Oxford & Stephen Blance, Associate, D Young & Co, Southampton). Jim is a scientist with a degree in biochemistry and an MSc in biochemical engineering, before converting to law. With his technical background he has advised many science and engineering clients on the protection and exploitation of Intellectual Property rights, as well as working for numerous clients in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, agri-bio and medical devices sector for over 20 years.  Steve undertook both a degree and a PhD in genetics before completing an MSc in intellectual property management and entering the patent profession.  He has worked in private practice for the last 10 years advising biotechnology clients ranging from universities and start-up companies to multinational food and drug companies on patent matters. Find out what life is like as a Solicitor and how to use your scientific expertise and skills as a Patent Attorney.

Life Sciences Careers Talks

Week 2: Thursday 10th February - Careers in Nutrition, Dietetics and Food (Dr Simon Wheeler, Lecturer in Human Nutrition, Oxford Brookes). Interested in food and nutrition? Or perhaps you might prefer to work in food policy with government departments like the Department of Health or the Foods Standards Agency?
