In the year 2000, things on the Cowley Road were not looking good. Shops were closing, businesses struggling and a vibrant, diverse community was under threat. Something had to change. The turning point came with the arrival of 'East Oxford Action'. Working with local groups and individuals, the regeneration of the area began and the results soon started to show. The Cowley Road was getting its groove back, and what better way to celebrate things getting better - and bring everyone together - than a party?! The Cowley Road Carnval was born! To get involved and for more information visit www.cowleyroadcarnival.co.uk or e-mail jhole@brookes.ac.uk.
Oxfringe 2009's headline performer was poet, comedian and musician John Hegley, who commented: "Spreading festival delight is a good thing, well done these folk!" Oxfringe 2010 needs volunteers to help with stewarding at outdoor events; ushering; leafleting; people with technical experience or box office experience to help manage venues; people with sound writing and critical skills to help with reviewing shows.
