Our Management Trainee role is designed to be very progressive. There is a lot of scope to move from location to location as well as up the ladder.

My advice to graduates entering the world of work would be:

  1. Pick and choose your battles. Recognise when it’s best to tow the corporate line and just say yes.
  2. Understand the importance of hard work. Success isn’t just going to fall on your lap – you’ve got to put in the hours.
  3. Get your overall attitude towards work right: be flexible, positive, prepared to move locations and hard working.
  4. Know that every job has its downsides, and that the grass isn’t necessarily going to be greener at another company.
  5. Recognise your strengths and weaknesses. Yes, you can do some remedial work to improve on your weaknesses, and you should most certainly focus on your strengths. But it doesn’t stop there: your strengths and weaknesses will change over time. For instance, I couldn’t sell a loaf of bread when I started but I now consider myself a strong salesperson.

When you’re looking for a job, you need to be aware that there are thousands of graduates with the same skills as you. What sets you apart? We don’t look for graduates from any particular discipline, but rather people who can demonstrate that they’re enthusiastic and flexible with good leadership skills.

For instance, did you have to balance your dissertation, part-time job and extra curricular activities at uni? Did you get involved in a sport that helped you understand how to motivate different personalities in your team?

When you apply for the Enterprise Management Scheme, you can expect an online application form, followed by a telephone interview, a face to face meeting, and an assessment centre day. This is both a chance for us to sell the company to you and for graduates to sell themselves to Enterprise.
