Gemma Webster, Public Health Nutrition BSC, Oxford Brookes
Adult & Children's Fitness Instructor & Nutrition Adviser, West Midlands
What do you do on a day-day basis?
I run by own business, Nuts About Nutrition & Fitness but I also work at The Fitness Factory and in local schools, children's centres, nurseries and care homes. It varies, but generally I teach a variety of fitness based sessions to children and adults as well as doing lots of admin work to plan my classes. I have been doing this for four years.
What’s the most exciting thing about your work?
The most exciting thing is the fact I get to work with such a variety of people and my sessions are never the same. They are fun and friendly and I really enjoy getting people fit. I love this industry and don't really see it as work! The most boring thing is the paperwork.
How did you end up in this career?
My parents own the gym where I work and before I went to university I qualified as an instructor. I went to university to develop my knowledge of nutrition as this plays a key role in health and fitness. I wanted to work for myself so I could be more flexible and move my career and business forward in my own way. It’s made it easier for me to combine my interest in both exercise and nutrition. I’m pleased with the results of my hard work as now I’ve developed quite a good reputation.
What qualifications, skills and experience do you need?
My degree is not essential for the work I do as I was already qualified (YMCA Gym Instructor, Aerobics Instructor & Children's Instructor) but it does help with the health and nutrition talks and leaflets I provide for my customers. You need to have good social skills and be able to interact with people on different levels. Confidence in your ability to teach and to take the lead, as well as being able to work as part of a team is also essential. In terms of experience, it’s important to go to fitness classes and practice what you preach!
What advice would you give to graduates?
This profession is not for people who are money driven; it is a job most instructors do because they love it so much. Go for it, but never undersell yourself. Think about working in the community, you’ll get a lot out of it and help people become fit and healthy!
