Elvis Nague
Degree: Technology Management
I spent my placement year in the HR department of BMW, helping to implement the new online recruitment tool, and teaching the team how to use both the front and back end of it. From day one, it was extremely hands-on and very varied. I learnt a lot of things that you just can’t get from a text book at university - such as life skills that you need in order to work well in an office environment. I also took it upon myself to get my Prince2 qualification, so that I could stand out from others when I graduated.
At uni I ran a Bible Studies Group, which helped me develop my communication and people skills. I was the Treasurer of a society that organised day trips and fashion shows, getting my organisational skills up to scratch. And I registered as a mentor for new students.
I’d advise students to take part in as many societies or clubs that they’re interested in. Even if it doesn’t feel like you’re learning anything, you’re still gaining valuable experiences. After all, employers don’t just want someone who’s academically smart – they want people who’ll get along with the rest of the team.
