Debbie Bishop
Employer: Bioanalab
Title: Laboratory Scientist
Degree: Human Biology
During uni and straight afterwards, I worked as a temp for NHS Professionals in various admin roles. In my interview, they were really interested in this because it showed I was used to working in a regulated environment – which is paramount in this job.
Apart from technical skills, the main aptitudes I use in my job are teamwork, time-management, organisation and prioritisation. Reliability, influencing skills and attention to detail are also vital. These are the kind of attributes you pick up in work placements and part-time jobs, so I’d strongly recommend getting as much experience as possible – even if it’s not relevant to your chosen career path.
When it comes to looking for a job, definitely visit all the graduate fairs; that’s how I found my job, as the person I spoke to is now my boss. Make as many contacts as possible and remember that the people on the stands are there for a reason – to help you – so make the most of their knowledge.
When you’ve got your CV up to scratch, get someone else to look it over and give you their opinion – especially if they’ve got knowledge or experience of the field you want to go into.
I’d also advise you to make an effort to get to know your lecturers, as they can give you a really good reference. Never be afraid to ask them questions if you don’t understand. And remember that it’s a small world; my lecturer used to work with my boss!
