Graduates

The following information highlights the variety of opportunities available to graduates on completing their studies. It is highly recommended that you use the resources on the rest of this website, particularly the Applying for a Job section, for every type of vacancy you apply for. We offer tips and techniques that will put you ahead of the competition. Please also take some time to read our graduate profiles.

Graduate Training Schemes

Over 500 major employers in the UK operate recognised Graduate Training Schemes and promote these vacancies to University students. The schemes generally run over one and two years. Some will offer the opportunity to experience several different areas of a business before choosing a final career path. The advantages of joining a training scheme are likely to be:

  • structured training programme;
  • planned career progression;
  • scope to develop your career within one organisation.

These schemes can be highly competitive, so to ensure you make an application of the quality required by the employers, please use the range of services the Careers and Employment Centre has to offer.

Graduate Jobs

The largest number of jobs available to graduates will be in small / medium sized enterprises (SME’s) or in large organisations in departments outside of the graduate training scheme. The advantages of joining a department or small / medium enterprise (SME) are likely to be:

  • flexibility to incorporate special knowledge, qualifications or previous experience;
  • greater variety of workload;
  • work having more immediate impact on the organisation.
