British Sign Language - a 6-week evening taster course for students

This taster course offers students the opportunity to establish underpinning knowledge and understanding of British Sign Language and to develop fundamental deaf awareness. With an estimated 125,000 deaf adults and up to 20,000 children using BSL in the UK, this will give you a useful additional workplace skill, helping you to understand and communicate with deaf clients, customers or colleagues across all sectors.
This course will cover the following elements: BSL alphabet and numbersGeneral conversation vocabulary including core topics such as familyDeaf awareness and culture The sessions will be fun and practical to create interactive learning.
As this is a taster course there will be no final examination but students can request a certificate of attendance on completion of the course. The course will consist of six 2 hour sessions. It will take place on the Headington Hill campus every Thursday, 5.30pm – 7.30pm, starting 23rd February for 6 weeks. Your trainer will be Nikki Jones, who has taught British Sign Language (BSL) level 1 to adults for the past 4 years (including for Oxfordshire Adult Education), with positive pass rates. She holds various qualifications including a BA Hons Degree in Deaf Studies and Education.

The full cost of the course is £35. 
To register please bring your deposit (non-refundable) of £35 in cash to the Careers Centre. Places are limited to 16 and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Daiwa Scholarship 2012

The English Language Assistants Programme

The English Language Assistants Programme spans four continents, placing 2,500 students of any discipline (including final years) and graduates in 15 countries worldwide. An English Language Assistant supports the teaching of English in a school, college or university abroad for 12 to 20 hours per week and receives a local salary. The programme offers participants the opportunity to improve foreign language skills and explore a community, whilst gaining teaching experience and a host of other transferable skills ranging from time management and resourcefulness to communication and assertiveness.

The minimum foreign language requirement is AS level or equivalent (no language requirement for China) and undergraduates must have completed at least two years of higher education before embarking on the assistantship. For more information please visit www.britishcouncil.org/languageassistants.
