Changing or leaving your course

If you are considering changing or leaving your University course, it might be valuable to assess your options and think about the reasons why you might want to make this decision.

Where does the problem lie?

Here are a few questions to consider carefully before you make your final decision.

  • Are you unhappy with your chosen course?
  • Are the problems more personal?
  • Is University life not living up to your expectations?
  • Are you worried about financial issues?
  • Or is it a combination of factors and you are having difficulty coping?

After reading through these questions and answering them honestly, hopefully you now have a better understanding of the problem. Now its time to contact people who can help you take the next step in overcoming these problems.

Where to get help?

  • Talk to your friends, family and fellow students about how you’re feeling; you'll be surprised how many people have been in a similar situation.
  • Read some of our graduate profiles to see what they've gone on to achieve and why it might be worth persevering.
  • If you are thinking about changing your course or dropping certain modules then you will need to talk to your personal tutor. If you’re not sure who this is you can check on your PIP page.
  • Come and talk to a careers counsellor, they can offer valuable advice about your future prospects and talk through your options. Look at the guidance leaflet on the Prospects website.
  • Talk to an advisor in the Advice Centre, they can offer guidance about all aspects of University life, as well as more academic issues. For more information on opening hours and contacting an advisor, please visit the Advice Centre section on the Students’ Union website.
