Applying for a job

This is the practical part of job hunting. Having got to this page you must have decided which job you want to do whether it be part-time, work experience, an internship, a placement, a graduate position or a more senior job. Whatever type of job it is that you are looking for, it is crucial that your application persuades the employer you are the best person for the job. The pages within this section show you how to market yourself on your application and then how to sell yourself at the interview.

The section has been designed to follow the order in which job hunting activities are undertaken, but you are welcome to dip into any section that best suits your needs.

Cover Letters

Many employers ask for a covering letter in addition to an application. Here we describe how to write the contents in a way that attracts the employer's eye.

CVs

In addition to a covering letter, many employers or recruitment agencies require a CV. Should I write two pages or one? How can I sell myself in the best way possible? What CV style should I use? These and other questions will be answered.

Application forms

Employers, especially large ones, often design their own application form. Covering both paper-based and internet-based forms we explain the best way to complete the "difficult questions" and how to avoid some of the common mistakes.

Interviews

So your application has landed you an interview – don't panic! Here we advise you on “How to win at interviews”.
