Step 5 Make yourself employable

A degree on its own will not get you the career you want. The perfect job for you will not drop out of the sky. You'll also need a wide range of employability skills. Identify the ones you need to develop by reading widely about the occupation you want to follow, and speaking to employers. You may also want to come in and talk to a Careers Counsellor.

Take control of the process - endeavour to put yourself in a position where you have everything you need to achieve your goal. This process can take time, so the earlier you start the better. The first year of your degree is not too early (but the final week before you graduate is still not too late).

You can develop your skills in a number of ways, for example: on your course, part-time work, volunteering, membership of clubs and societies, time out of university. Look at the Top Ten Transferable Skills and prospects.
