As the largest juice manufacturer in the UK, we create products for large multiples both in this country and US.

Although my degree is relevant to my job, I think it really helped that I had temping and work experience in the food industry. In fact, I had done some summer temping work at Gerber, and kept in touch with them so that when I finished uni I could come back to them. I’ve been here ever since and have worked my way up into the position I’m in now.

Aside from technical knowledge, the skills I use on a day to day basis include teamwork and communication. In the lab we work in teams of six, but within the company there are 500 people that I can come into contact with.

I also have to present to customers and get them to buy into our new product ideas. Therefore you need to be able to convey your ideas and get your point across. Presentations at uni stand you in good stead for this.

When it comes to being successful at work, I’d advise you to grab any opportunity you’re given. Always be ready to put your hand up and have a go. It’s also about who you know, so build good relationships with people across your industry. You need to be very friendly in working relationships.

Being a member of the Brookes Canoe Club helped prepare me for the world of work, because I was part of a team organising activities and weekend trips. Although not academic, activities like this help you develop your interpersonal and teamworking skills. They require trust and commitment.

When it comes to interviews, it goes without saying that you should do your homework on the company, but also go the extra mile by handing out copies of presentations you’ve done. And go in there with bags of confidence!
